Gum Fields at Awanui

Who is your buddy, Duncan?

Me, behind the bar....again.....

What could be so interesting in a wall of mud guys?

Malcolm, Percy's oldest brother, now lives at Tokerau Beach, a lovely olive growing area in the far north of the north island. In the 1920's there was a thriving Kari gum business. Otherwise known as Amber. Kari gum bleeds and drops gum balls to the ground, which become buried over thousands of years, fossilises and becomes Amber. Gum was the largest export from NZ, bigger than gold, for over 60 years.

Sadly I came away with no amber jewellery. Next year perhaps
